What is Equine Facilitated Psychotherapy (EFP)?
EFP is an experiential education process based on the belief that horses can help us learn new, more innovative ways of thinking about our behavior and how we interact with others. Through a collaborative experiential learning process, participants use past experience, trial and error, reflection, generalization and metaphors to facilitate learning.
Therapeutic activities integrate the healing power of the horse, the skills of a horse professional and a mental health professional and the challenges and successes of the participants to formulate and work towards a variety of goals.
EFP creates opportunities for participants to develop trust, gain insight into their styles of interaction, develop problem solving skills, address conflict resolution, experience healthy risk taking, enhance verbal and nonverbal communication, increase boundary setting skills, enhance creative decision making and strengthen relationships within a non-threatening environment. Issues that arise during the workshops are linked with the larger ongoing issues within the day-to-day life of the client to promote growth and change.
